t’posh frocks on

We’re in Islington again tomorrow at the New Designers gig, chatting to graduates and talking about Folksy and of course wrapping truants on the knuckles with The Rulers. Posh frocks all round as it’s the opening day of the second week. If you’re there and you want to say ‘Hi’ then twitter us.

It’s interesting how we’ve mainly picked up the UK Etsy crowd [woo, you brazen craftmafia sisters you!] and not many of the graduates we’ve spoken to. This may be because you Etsy people “geddit” already and you’re familiar with online retailing and using Paypal. Graduates perhaps aren’t. So we think we’re going to have to try harder to tell them what to do and what the benefits are of doing it. You may know what those benefits are more than we do. What are they?

What else are we doing? Er, well we’re fixing your requests on the site as quickly as we can. You’ll soon be able to ‘edit’ or ‘re-edit’ a listing and also be able to add multiple quantities of things which are two of the major requests. The forum also goes live in the next few days [please do ask Andy to pull his finger out and we may get it done quicker]. And we’re also frantically organising stuff for the Lovebox workshop on the 19th and 20th July [and if any of you lovely ladies and gentlemen fancy helping out at the workshop in exchange for a free ticket and food and er, that's it, then please let us know via get [at] folksy [dot] com]. You’ve no idea how hard it is to get tables and chairs or haystacks to rent and be delivered in London on a weekend. Truly. Don’t even think about holding a workshop in a music festival with 20 000 people in a park in summer. We’ll post more information about the Lovebox stuff nearer the time, once recieved our ransom demands and had our heads read.

Also wondering if we could somehow plan to do a distributed Mexican wave to celebrate our first week of testing and the wonderful job you’ve done in feeding back your comments. Would it work? Perhaps we need new app for skype / IM / Facebook, a mexican wave app where it tells you exactly when to stand synced perfectly to the next user… How good would that be! If you were office bound you could pretend you were doing speed yoga or charity standy-uppies.

  1. Could it be that the etsy crowd have images ready to go and are using writing all the required blurb?
And the new designers are, bless ‘em, students and not quite ready to go in the real world having just spent the past few weeks busting a gut getting ready for new designers? I reckon those guys will be more of a slow burn and pick themselves up after a summer break. I’d sure need a rest after that.

and yay with the editing – hurry please, I need to add some washing instructions!

  2. As a proud member of the UK Etsy crowd, I’m happy to be a proud member of Folksy too! Good work so far, we’re all rooting for a huge success :D

  3. As another member of the UK Etsy crowd, we’re proud to have a UK portal to jump upon – plus as Sally say’s we’re already used to e-commerce, our photos and blurb is done and we just love having a UK site and UK pound sterling to show our wares off on!… One word of advice… the UK Etsian’s can talk… a lot! You may want to hang back on your forum ! :D

  4. Heehee, yep I’m one of those etsy users and I think we just have things ready to use. :) Just nice listing things in good old UK £. :) Quite a few familiar faces I’m seeing.

  5. Hi Sally – edit away it’s all done :) And I think you’re right, there’s a level of literacy / understanding which many students just have not got as regards selling online. We’re working on making it easier for them.

Make Lounge – missed you – but will definitely visit soon. We love what you do!

Vicky – Thanks! We love Etsy too and we can hopefully exist together. Friendly competition :) We’ve also got some plans to do some other things which give us some distnace from Etsy as a pure online marketplace. More on that in the weeks / months to come.

MadebyCara – Talking is good, no? We really do want to feedback and hopefully they’ll cut us some slack is we post up regular pics of us sweating to meet your needs…?

CuteDesigns – £ feels good doesn’t it. Too many things are in $. Familiar Etsy folk abound. We’re working hard to bring in other people too so that we can offer a real diverse selection of things for sale as the more folksy things for sale = the more eyeballs to go for.
