We had thirteen entries for the craft as news competition. We’ve enjoyed going through them and seeing what news story inspired the pieces – and there are a range of influences and interpretations making this all-the-more interesting as a project. Huge thankyous for those that took part.

  1. Right- My vote goes to Daisies Boob. Having a tiny baby to feed is surely difficult enough without feeling ‘indecent’ nursing the little mite. People seem to really struggle with breasts having a dual purpose!

  2. Nick

I’m a breast man myself so i’d have to vote for Daisie. No seriously, my wife breast fed both of our beautiful children and it was amazing, not to mention hard work at times but she stuck at it and i’m very proud of her. Shame on face book!

  3. Dean

I have to agree with Nick, I’m a breast man. My little girl was breastfed and I’m very proud of my better half for it. My vote goes to Dasie and her beautiful Boob.

  4. I vote for Fibrespace, though it was a tough call, I also liked Amanda’s bouquet and Amy’s shoe card :)

*crosses fingers someone votes for my bracelet*

  5. Dr. Breen

The sexualisation of the female breast is the issue in society as a whole, social networking sites like facebook are, in Daily Mail speak, engendering the nanny state philosophy that all breast activity, even that which the breast was designed for, is “pornographic”. This is clearly ridiculous and doesn’t help empower new mothers to practice this even in cyberspace. Well done Daisie Davies! Knit another and we’ll have a pair!

  6. I have to say JennyFlowerBlue and her cigarette cover. I would love to see burly old men hurrying to hide their purchase in a flowery disguise.

  7. i’m going to have to vote the Daisy and her booby!
Being a breastfeeding peer supporter and having breastfed both my children for longer than the majority of society find “decent” i have to support the breastfeeding cause – hurrah for boobies!!!!

  8. ooh, this was a toughie – i adored everything by oliver postgate and after the sad news of his passing, my other-half bought the bagpuss dvd – brought tears to our eyes! after much deliberation though, my vote goes to fibrespace for such a stylish response :)

  9. Aly

All are so talented, but my vote goes to NiftyKnits. If forced again to make a choice I’d say the clanger. Thank You!

  10. My vote has to go to Jenny for pure genius, who’d have thought that you could make a pack of smokes look all girly! Love the tongue in cheek of it! XXX

  11. Amy

my vote goes to amanda’s money bouquet – such a clever idea! i love it. (also love quercus’ cufflinks too btw!)

  12. Mmm, it’s a tough decision and I’m torn between NiftyKnits and Gillian.
I think Gillian gets my vote in the end because although I LOVE the Clangers, I’m also very fond of Bagpuss and it’s great to see Professor Augustus Barclay Yaffle, to give him his full name; not that I’m sad or anything ;) get his due. Jackie @ Forever Foxed

  13. Dan

What a great competition, really interesting to see people’s takes. loved fibrespace as I love my woolen clothes but my vote is for Nifty for the Clanger, spot on!

  14. Aarrgh such tough choices. It’s between the Yaffle bag, the Clanger and the Credit Crunch sampler. I think I’ll go for the embroidery, it’s the perfect juxtaposition of traditional and modern. Brilliantly done, Lupin!

p.s. being from Manchester, I feel compelled to even up the Blur/Oasis rivalry – boo hiss to Blur! (but nicely done bracelet, all the same)

  15. MidnightBleu

I vote for PennyDog. The bracelet is awesome!

Good luck, everyone. All of the entries are really creative and amazing.

  16. It’s a tough call, I love both of Nifty’s entries – she had such luck with the news!! I love Amanda’s clever entry, but I’m going with the womens’ rights issue, it’s boobs for me and Daisy’s entry!

  17. After long and hard deliberation, seriously I look at everything many many times, I am going to vote for Fibrespace. That jacket alone in awesome. The skill that went into that doll is amazing.

It was sooo hard to pick as I loved them all.

  18. I’m going to cast my vote for the shoe story (Amy) because it is really intriguing. If the lottery is still throwing money at it I wouldn’t mind camping out there in the summer…well, maybe not LOL

  19. Marmalady

As the wife of a morris dancers and the inspiration for Nifty’s customised dancers –it has to be the morris dancers for me!

  20. Fantastic items, well done all of you and I really mean that.

My vote is for Amanda’s wedding bouquet, I think it’s a really unique idea and it looks lovely.

A BIG cheer for boobies from a mum who breastfed both her beautiful daughters and is sure it’s why they are so bright and cheerful!

  21. lucy

this is too hard! I really like hem all, i think i have to vote for thr Yaffle bag just because i want it! i really love the money bouquet too!

  22. anne

I read the article in the guardian and was very angry that these photos were deemed pornographic. What an outrage! Boobies all the way for me. Well done daisie!

  23. I am so so torn on this, it’s between Daisie’s boobie (as a militant breastfeeder myself!) and Pennydog’s Blur bracelet but I think Pennydog just edges it for me. Lovely work!

P.S. I don’t know about any of the rest of you but my nipples were certainly a darker shade than that after pregnancy! :p

  24. I am torn between two………. I am going to vote for Fibrespaces beautiful doll as it is so intricate and just gorgeous…..

..the boob however came a close second as the story it relates to just made a me a little bit cross!! I also am a huge fan of breatfeeding my children (there are quite a few of us here aren’t there) and have fed my 3 for WAY longer than most too. I’ve done 46 months altogether.

  25. Really GREAT stuff x x wow! But it has to be GILLIAN with YAFFLE – there is no more beautiful programme ever made for a crafter / vintage hoarder / book lover … than bagpuss and yaffle x x x x

  26. Kelcey

I’d like to vote for Dasie with the soft pink single boob. Breastfeeding isn’t obscene!
    What creative entries everyone has!

  27. how ridiculous to make us choose a winner from these … I refuse to do it … it’s too hard!! … aaagh … oh okay then … Gillian’s Yaffle bag … There you are, I went through untold mental anguish and chose one … happy now? ;-)

Well done to all the entrants for making it almost impossible to choose a favourite :-)

  28. Caroline

I breast fed my child for 25 months and truly believe that it is the most natural thing to do, I guess the people who complained on facebook were bottle-fed synthetic chemical milk. My vote goes to Daisie and her magnificent boob!

  29. Jen

I think NiftyKnits morris dancers should win. My mum was a morris dancer and these little treats are just devine! I think i might actually buy her one for her birthday!

  30. alison

hmmm, well, it has to be gillian’s yaffle bag for my vote. the use of different stitches and material made for a great way of creating the 3D effect. “charming, quite charming”, as the distinguished old woodpecker himself might have said!

  31. Rob

I vots for nifty knits the clanger is a classic and my second choice would have to be the good old morris dancers

  32. we should a few votes more per person! my only one goes to Pennydog`s bracelet… but if I had two more they would go as follows: Dasie`s breast and Bee`s piece of jigsaw…

  33. Lenny

This was such a toughie, but I finally made up my mind! I vote for number 3, much kudos to Niftyknits for her awesomely cute clanger! Reminds me of chilldhood tv watching in pj’s. :)

  34. drphibes

Like the clanger and the Professor Yaffle bag, but as the husband of a staunch lactavist I must vote for Daisie’s breast (and shame on Facebook).

  35. I think all the entries are great, but my vote goes to Gillian’s Yaffle bag, I adore Bagpuss, I love nostalgia and I have a complete weakness for bags :)
