#Maker Faire

Comments

Hello. Yesterday we were at the Maker Faire in Newcastle showing some of the things made at the Makers and Hackers workshops we organised (with tinker.it) in London and Sheffield. It was a super day, with some excellent ideas and fun things to play with. It’s cemented in our minds that the ‘edges’ of craft, like craftzine are something worth exploring as they provide a vision not only of things to come but are a way into showcasing craft to a wider audience who might not otherwise be interested. We had so many kids and adults (and BBC News and other media organisations) yesterday fascinated by what we’d made and wanting to know more, it was great to experience and a real eye opener. Hopefully we’ll be able to organise similar events soon.

You can see our photos from the Maker Faire yesterday here. And a whole load more here.

If you’re heading up to go the Faire today be sure to say hello to Rob (from Folksy) and Alex (from tinker.it).

Oh, and Becky and Jim and some of those working on the Dancing Spatz idea which went down a storm at their demo yesterday have created a website of their ‘product’. Hilarious. I’ve more videos of this which I’ll put up soon, hopefully before the idea goes into mass production and goes stellar!

Pennydog and Crafteroo (the fabulous craft forum) have created a shop in support of Comic Relief. The items have all been created by people on the Crafteroo forum. Hello, if you haven’t been here before, I hope you like it :)

We’re obviously not charging for listings so all the money from the items goes straight to good things. You’ve got ’til the 13th March, when the festivities start and the giving spectacle kicks off in earnest, but the shop will probably be around for a bit after that…

Great idea guys, hope it all goes really well… hopefully well enough to push Lenny Henry off of his perennial gig and showcase some real talent ;)

Making the News ~ Competition

News is communicated in lots of different ways. Through images, which often become iconic (think of Margaret Thatcher waving out of the window at No. 10 as she was ousted, or sunshine in the artic for global warming stories), through satire, such as cartoons (I love Martin Rowson’s work) and of course through text. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a go at representing the news in craft form? Topical craft!

This post on The Storque prompted my interest. Obama mania crept into craft stuff. Sellers realised topical things, especially of the chosen one, would sell. I’m not sure that’s always going to be the case, but it would be fun to have a different take on the news, through craft (drawings, prints, simple made objects). So, let’s try and create the slowest news ever and make the news in craft form?
