A place for everything? Changes to categories

by admin

As the number of items on Folksy grows we need to add new categories to our existing ones, so we wanted to blog about them first to get some feedback.

Supplies: We’ll be looking at materials separately and creating a new area for them in the future, so will get feedback on materials headings at another time.

A fibre art section under Art and Photography would be nice. Otherwise looks pretty good!

Nigel Fayle June 9, 2010 - 11:30 pm

For Homeware I would go with ‘ Garden and Outdoor’ to also cover things like camping ,must be scope for crafts in tents, camper vans and caravans, and howabout an Eco/Green craft category?.

Polka Dots And Posies June 10, 2010 - 12:18 am

I would like to see Tshirts in the clothing section if possble as the personalised ones are my best sellers

Miss Frekkles June 10, 2010 - 6:09 am

Its great that you’re expanding your sections. I make knitted scarves, I would normally put them under accessories? I would like to put them in a clothing – accessories – scarves section. You don’t have a knitting/knitwear section at all.

Minky Magic June 10, 2010 - 7:07 am

How about a cufflinks section or one for mens gifts only?

Anne June 10, 2010 - 7:32 am

Hi all. Thanks – these are really helpful.

Deb – could Fibre Art come under Mixed Media?

Polka Dots and Posies – T-shirts are already there under Clothing :)

Miss Frekkles – yes, you’re right. Our categories are all for the type of item rather than how it’s made. There’s a ‘practices’ tag for knitting. Is there knitwear that isn’t covered in the existing clothing categories, d’you think?

Minky Magic – There is a Cufflinks section under Jewellery already. Is that where you’d expect to find it? And yes, men’s gifts would be useful.

Thanks again!

Eidelweiss June 10, 2010 - 7:48 am

Utterly selfishly, I’d love a cleaning section in homewares if that’s at all possible? And possibly make tea cosies just ‘cosies’?

CraftConfections June 10, 2010 - 8:45 am

A knitting/crochet/sewing (needlecrafts?) section would be helpful

Especially for patterns – currently these are mixed in with the finished items.

marceline June 10, 2010 - 8:56 am

These are great additions, thanks! I would probably expect to find bookmarks in stationery though, especially if books are being added there. Does books refer to blank books or self-published books? If the latter, it might be a bit confusing that zines are currently under Art.

Through The Round Window June 10, 2010 - 9:08 am

Ooh, yes, the glass art category will be most welcome…one thing though, could they just be “glass”, “ceramics”, “textiles” etc. – as they are already under the “Art” category?

Thanks, Flora

Jo June 10, 2010 - 9:24 am

Glass art! Great!

Lynwoodcrafts June 10, 2010 - 10:04 am

I recently listed some coasters and couldn’t find a specific category – just Homewares (perhaps I looked in the wrong place).

Lynwoodcrafts June 10, 2010 - 10:05 am

Sorry – just double checked and you do have coasters will revise my listing.

a ‘cleaning section in homewares’ would be fantastic or possibly a ‘laundry’ one. I’ve just listed a few vintage fabric peg bags, and couldn’t find a category that fitted them exactly, so had to put in ‘home decorations’. You could possibly consider changing ‘Drawer scenters’ to ‘lavender sachets’. Lots of people sell ‘lavender sachets’, but you don’t *have* to put them in drawers, they can go in wardrobes, bedside tables, door handles etc.

Lynsey aka Swirlyarts June 10, 2010 - 11:34 am

Doorstops would be a very useful addition for me as would envelopes in the stationery section. I would also second the idea of having somewhere to put peg bags and where do pincushions need to go? I don’t think i have found a place for them yet!

Anne June 10, 2010 - 12:09 pm

Thanks all. These are really helpful. We’ll definitely make some changes to the list as a result.

Marceline – I was thinking of things like colouring books and self-published books, but we do have blank ones. Personally I wouldn’t expect to find zines under Art, would you? Maybe we need a Books and zines top category?

Flora – that seems very sensible! A bit more inclusive too.

Eidelweiss/Pouch – yes, that’s an interesting area. Would ‘Housework’ be too dull as a heading?!

Lynsey – yep, good ones! Pincushions are a tricky one along with other similar crafting accesories (like needle rolls etc). Would you look for them with supplies/materials do you think, or do we need something else?

If it’s okay we’ll just leave this running for a while to get more feedback then follow-it up in another blog post. Thanks for all the comments – please keep them coming!

Lynwoodcrafts June 10, 2010 - 1:53 pm

Not sure how we should currently tag needlecases (and other hand-crafted items for other crafters to use)

Miss Frekkles June 10, 2010 - 2:00 pm

Thank you Anne. Its really good that you can only list scarves in one place.
I can’t think of any other headings for Clothing…Although I wouldn’t expect to find shawl or poncho in there I would look for them in accessories. (you also have shawl in both asseccories and clothing which might mean items get missed in the listings)
I always tag my items with knitting, it that what you mean?

Konnie Kapow June 10, 2010 - 2:57 pm

Very selfishly indeed I would like to see a ‘special occasion’ or similar category or something where greeting cards could be broken down into categories like birthdays, weddings, babies etc …

Sarah @ Northfield Primitives June 10, 2010 - 6:55 pm

I think that the new sections are a welcome addition, but I still don’t have a category to happily list my work. I make ‘old’ toys which are purely decorative and not suitable for children, so I never feel comfortable about listing them under the Toys section. I usually stick them in Homeware, but it would be nice to have a kitchenalia or decorative/collectable section where my animals might be happier!

I am open to (polite) suggestions about where I can stick my animals! Sarah x

Jenny June 10, 2010 - 8:44 pm

I would also love to see doorstops, envelopes & pincushions added & I agree with Pouch’s suggestion of maybe changing drawer scenters to something like lavender sachets. My other request would be for a paperweights category to be added :-)

Lindsey June 10, 2010 - 8:53 pm

Could you add ‘washbags’

Also would really like you to add the ‘upcycle’ tag so we can sell our products under the ethical banner if they fit. This is one of my main selling points, and would be something a lot of people would now like to search for. Very relevant to Follksy folk.

thanks.

Lisa Hafey June 10, 2010 - 8:58 pm

Rolls – pencil, crayon, crochet hook, knitting needle (and my latest, cutlery!) I’ve been listing under “stationery” but I’m not satisfied with that as a category – I’m also sure I’d not look for them under supplies/materials – I don’t know, how about “equipment storage”, or “tool storage” or the like? (even “crafted for crafters”…)

Lindsey June 10, 2010 - 9:01 pm

oh just to add, eco or upcycle good but think ‘green’ is now a bit eighties and outmoded.

Know you had a recycle tag, but re-use (ie upcycle) is even better, so would be good to be able to sell in on this.

Thinking also of wider internet searches, if we list ‘upcycle’ items, if you add that category, then – would a general www search of the internet pull up our upcycled items????

Sparrow Primitives June 11, 2010 - 8:41 am

Collectables section would be good please.

marceline June 11, 2010 - 11:34 am

A Books and Zines top category would be awesome – zines are growing in popularity again, and some people might not consider text-only zines to be art.

I don’t really mind either way, I just think Zines, Books and Bookmarks should all be in the same place if possible. Thanks!

heather aka NiftyKnits June 11, 2010 - 3:08 pm

textile art – would that include soft sculpture or something of that ilk? I hate listing my meerkats as toys or dolls, as there is then an assumption they are for small children. collectables?

Anne June 11, 2010 - 3:34 pm

Collectables and gifts? Would that work? It’s quite broad. We could use ‘adult toys’ but that makes them sound rude.

Helen-S aka hmsdesign/ffflowers June 12, 2010 - 11:28 am

Like the look of the new categories – are you going to tidy up the existing ones and get rid of the placemat/placemats and lamp/lampshade/lightshade confusion?

Leanne June 12, 2010 - 2:04 pm

I’d drop the “I” and just make the category “phone covers” some of us are very addicted to our blackberries you know:)

I would also say to drop the “tea” and just have cosies instead because there are quite a lot of cosies listed for cups and such too.

And maybe “scented sachets” would work better than drawer scenters, some are made to hang so aren’t specifically for drawers and they don’t all contain lavender as some people are very sensitive to it.

rosina40 June 12, 2010 - 7:14 pm

I would like to set up a shop on Folksy. We make eco products. We have bowls made from strawboard and novelty shelves from strawboard, what category would they come under? I can`t find a listing that covers them> Can we still set up a shop?

Anne June 13, 2010 - 8:03 pm

Hi Rosina, yes of course. There aren’t always categories for everything but it shouldn’t stop you buying. A lot of people use the search anyway so the categories often doesn’t matter.

There is already a category for bowls under Homeware and maybe we could add Storage as a category for your shelves?

Eidelweiss June 14, 2010 - 8:33 am

Only just had a chance to look at this again – ‘housework’ works for me!

Claire June 14, 2010 - 3:41 pm

Yay for the categories additions – brilliant.

I really need somewhere for craft kits – do they get listed as supplies? Even if so, there is no category for them to go in at the moment, unless I missed it. I know I’m not the only person with kits to list, so sure it would be greatly appreciated.

The other categories on my wish list have already been suggested. :)

Polka Dots And Posies June 14, 2010 - 3:42 pm

Ohoo yes so they are ;0) Tshirts are there already thanks for that

baggieaggie June 14, 2010 - 3:50 pm

I’d like to see ‘Knitting Patterns’, please.

Mandy Needham June 14, 2010 - 3:52 pm

Hi,

I make ipad cases and find myself hovering between iphone covers and laptop cases, neither one or the other but close to both.

Mandy (padsack)

Lupin June 14, 2010 - 3:56 pm

I’d really like an “other” or “misc” subcat in all the categories please! There will always be odd bits and pieces that don’t fit anywhere else (and I make some of them!)

Anne June 14, 2010 - 9:09 pm

Thanks all.

Claire – we need a good think about craft kits – they’re tricky! I wonder if we need a “Crafty gifts” section or “Things to make”?

baggieaggie – We’ll add patterns into the materials categories when they come in. Does that make sense to you?

Mandy – okay, thanks!

Lupin – could you give us an idea of what the uncategorisable things are? ‘Other’ can end up as a bit of a dumping ground so we’d like to avoid it if at all possible!

Claire June 14, 2010 - 11:36 pm

How about a greeting card section? I make birthday and Christmas cards mainly plus others too, so could you make a section in the stationery section or a greeting card section with a sub list like men’s, women’s, Christmas, children’s etc. I think that would be fab as I can list loads!!!!! Thanks for letting us put our input in to this. :o)

Anna Berry June 15, 2010 - 4:08 pm

Great to have a bookmark catagory. Thanks

Julie Monk June 16, 2010 - 1:39 pm

How about canvas prints in art and photography

Lupin June 16, 2010 - 6:26 pm

Thanks for your reply Anne… I need a place to put my moustaches, masks etc which currently have no category… would a “Costumes” section under Clothing or Accessories perhaps be possible? :)

Anne June 16, 2010 - 8:14 pm

Oh wow, maybe we do need an ‘Other’ Didn’t think of masks and moustaches! Costumes sounds like a good solution. ‘Tis done!

Lupin June 17, 2010 - 12:39 pm

Hurrah, thanks Anne :)

Pat June 17, 2010 - 4:44 pm

Could we possibly have a polymer clay section added as it is not really ceramics?

Also, is there a specific section for handmade buttons? At the moment I put them under “accessories”.

Pat June 17, 2010 - 4:47 pm

Sorry, I also meant to ask, could we have a section under jewellery for “sets” or be able to add more than one category? (I make necklace and earring sets and bangle and ring sets but can only enter “necklace” or “bangle” at the moment.)

evie June 19, 2010 - 9:47 am

Could you please add ‘Art Dolls’ to toys and dolls.

evie June 19, 2010 - 2:07 pm

Could we please have a ‘prints’ section instead of them being included in original art.

Many thanks!

sweet talk June 21, 2010 - 1:44 am

Why hasn’t the soaps and oils category been changed? There is no option for lip balm, body butter, hand cream etc…
It’s very hard to list my products under the current options in this category and was looking forward to the change :(
Is the soaps and oils section going to be expanded???

Treecycle June 21, 2010 - 9:47 pm

Hi, could you please also include woodturning or wood art under a category please?

cheerymishmash July 2, 2010 - 8:47 pm

I don’t expect there to be a mad rush on this one, but I have trouble putting juggling beanies into a category, and I can’t see that they are going to fit into any of the new categories either – At the moment they are listed under toys and dolls as a ‘toy’, but in my description I have to say that they are not suitable for small children because they are filled with beans!

Other than creating a ‘circus skills’ category just for me – could there be a ‘beanbags’ or ‘balls’ category?

Rhiannon July 7, 2010 - 11:40 pm

Hi,

Would it be possible to add ties (or neckties) as a category? Either in clothing or accessories?

Ta!

Sarah August 13, 2010 - 11:12 pm

Socks/ Slippers.. I have no idea where to put these!

Kerry November 26, 2010 - 8:50 am

Hi … am a folksy newbie!! Have asked folksy under the discussions section for a category for things like crystals/healing tools/spiritual/metaphysical items etc. We make crystal and gemstone therapeutic healing tools such as pendulums and crystal wands etc. which don’t seem to quite fit into jewellery or accessories. Seemed to be met very enthusiastically by folksy so hopefully a new category will be added for this soon. Hope this will be helpful to other sellers too. – am also interested to find out what sellers of similar items would currently put their listings under – I haven’t put anything on yet because I just couldn’t seem to find the right place to put it … any suggestions please?? Many thanks :o)
