JEWELLERY MAKERS TIPS! – Perfect Pearls

I generally use glass pearls, uniform in size lots of colours and they don’t break the bank but if you want to treat yourself to the real thing…….

Pearls are made of calcium carbonate and are formed inside the shells of living molluscs’. The most valuable pearls are those formed naturally and as such these are extremely rare.

Akoya pearls come from oysters and are considered of higher value than freshwater pearls. The majority are now cultivated in China rather than Japan who were traditional farmers of pearls.

China is also a large producer of freshwater pearls which come from mussels.

The lustre of a pearl impacts on its value, the thinner and more numerous the layers in the pearl the better the lustre. So you may not find any on your local beach but you could certainly find some in your local bead shop.
