The first sewing pattern to make it into May’s selection is pattern 2247, a pretty dress suitable for both a day out and a special occasion. Part of the Amazing Fit range, this dress is made up of individual pattern pieces, helping to create a perfectly bespoke fit.
Also included is Simplicity’s retro 1590 blouse, a gorgeous pattern for vintage lovers, with a simple but stylish peplum design, making it a timeless design, as well as Simplicity’s ‘Easy to Sew’ 2451 skirt pattern, offering four different styles – including a classic pencil skirt with added pleats and pockets.
Completing the May Martin Edit is Simplicity’s 2369 pattern, a perfect project for jersey fabrics with wrapped pleated fronts on the top and dress create flattering lines, as well as the Simplicity 1254 coat, with a dramatic over-sized collar that can be worn as a shawl or hood for extra warmth.

Making my own clothes is a great way to express my individuality and creativity. I can be frugal by up-cycling some retro designs and custom fit them to my size.

Sewing your own clothes means you can have something that it completely unique, guaranteeing that no one else is wearing the same thing. It also means you can make items that fit your unique body measurements.
Since giving up smoking and putting on lots of weight I find it difficult to find clothes I like in styles I like so I started making my own again and re-discovered just how satisfying it is to put on that finished garment once the last thread has been snipped 😃
I love the coat pattern especially. So I fine sewing my own clothes lets me expand my imagination. Ive always followed trends but like to out my own twist on things. ..Im also quite skinny…so petite waisted and tall enough for extra length in trousers…so its easier to make things to fit me than bought ready made. Usually; bought clothes end up too short in the leg…or too big in the waist…what can I say…Im a total fusspot ha ha…I need a little simplicity in my life!
I’m quite slim and petite so I find it hard to find clothes that really fit me, being able to make my own clothes catered to my specific measurements is great, and I love the sense of accomplishment when a piece is completed, like, I made this!
Handmade clothes mean I can dress originally in clothes which fit my short stature.

The best thing about making your own clothes is that they are unique to you. You can customise them as you want and use so many different fabrics to make them individual. Not just that – it’s great when people compliment you on what you’re wearing and the look on their faces when you tell them that you made it !!

I’ m new to sewing and it is the satisfaction of learning something new that enables me to be creative and express myself in a far more meaningful way than going to a shop to buy a ready to wear item. Also taught myself to knit this year and both hobbies allow me to practice mindfulness whilst creating something beautiful.

I would love to win this prize because I did metalwork and woodwork at school and never learned to sew clothes! I think home sewn clothes will be great as you can ensure a perfect fit, and choose exactly the fabrics and styles to express your own personality.

I really enjoy the whole process of making my own clothes- finding a pattern, a gorgeous print on some fabric, the challenge of making a flat piece of fabric into a garment, and finally wearing a piece of clothing that only fits me, and no one else will ever have!

I’m a tricky shape so it is hard to get shop bought clothes that fit and flatter me. By making my own I can tweak the fit (the most important thing in my case), choose fabrics I love and know that I’m not going to turn up at work other a party to find someone wearing the same outfit. Sewing is my passion. I think about it all the time and some of my happiest times are in my sewing room, creating away! Handmade clothing is a special hobby because one can create such individuals looks with the fabric choices, patterns and details. The pieces can be altered to fit perfectly and patterns can be interchanged to fit the style of each person. When sewing clothing, you can be assured that no one else will be seen with the same garment! It is truly one of a kind!

As a seamstress I love creating new dresses and altering patterns to make something that little bit special. Being a shorter lady I’ve always had to be a bit creative when making my own dresses, skirts and blouses to wear. I have piles of beautiful fabric’s just crying out to be made into something special to wear.

No two garments look the same although everyone using the same pattern. Everyone brings their own uniqueness to the design even if they don’t change anything about the pattern.

I love being creative and making things. It’s relaxing doing something practical with my hands and it’s good having a sense of achievement when a project is finished! It can be difficult buying clothes I like, so if I make them I can choose a style a like, with fabric I love and end up with something unique. I like that I can make clothes that fit too – I haven’t made many clothes yet though, so this is something I’m still learning how to do better!
