In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make two rustic Christmas decorations. If you’re a lover of the shabby chic, country cottage look, why not try your hand at making either a Rustic Ribbon Tree Decoration and a Twine Angel Ornament… or both? The Rustic Christmas Tree an incredibly simple and adorable Christmas decor and the perfect way to get creative without spending a fortune. Likewise, who would have thought you could create a beautiful, homespun angel ornament by raiding the contents of a craft and ribbon box? Even if you don’t have a craft box, the things you need to make these Twine Angels are incredibly easy to get your hands on and cost next to nothing to purchase. The natural twine adds a real rustic and timeless look to this Christmas decoration.
So fetch your woolly hat and scarf, take a stroll on a crisp winter morning, gather some twigs, and then head home to your craft box to get making. Enjoy!
Rustic Ribbon Christmas Tree Decoration
You will need:
- An assortment of festive ribbons (you can find lots of ribbons on Folksy!)
- A foraged twig
- Twine (click here to shop for twine on Folksy)
- Glue gun (I got mine from Hobbycraft)
How to make:
Step 1: Begin by choosing your ribbons – how many you need depends on the size of the twig

Begin by selecting your ribbons. The amount of ribbon you need will depend on the length of the twig you’ve chosen.
Step 2: Tie your ribbons to the twig with a double knot

Tie your ribbons to the twig and double knot them.
Step 3: Cut your ribbons on the diagonal on each side, making them smaller as you work your way down to create a Christmas Tree shape.

Cut your ribbons diagonally on each side, reducing the length of each ribbon as you work your way down. This will give you the Christmas Tree shape.
Step 4: Loop a piece of twine together and glue it to the top of your Christmas tree.

That’s it! Your rustic Christmas tree ornament is ready to hang! Try making a few, alternating the ribbons and then hanging like Christmas Tree bunting from your mantelpiece. These little trees also make sweet gifts and stocking fillers.

Twine Angel Rustic Christmas Tree Ornament
You will need:

- A roll of burlap or hessian (try Hobbycraft or John Lewis)
- Ribbon (click here to shop for ribbons on Folksy!)
- A piece of cardboard – 8cm x 8cm
How to make:
Step 1: Cut your cardboard so it measures 8cm x 8cm.

Step 2: Begin wrapping your twine around the cardboard (approx 15 times)

Step 5: When you remove the twine, it should resemble a tassel. Tie another piece of string around the top of the tassel to create a head and body.

That’s it! Your rustic angel decoration is finished! Now hang your angel from your tree, or try making a few and stringing them together to create a little choir of Christmas angels.
