Meet the Artist – Sarah Capper from Doodleicious Art
Artist Sarah Capper from Doodleicious Art describes her work as “exquisitely detailed doodles” – and they really are. Each of her illustrations is layered with intricate detail, natural forms and colour, creating floral incarnations of the familiar. A dreamer, inspired by Sixties flower power and Boho style, Sarah also has a streak of determination and an understanding of what it takes to run a creative business that have enabled her to become one of the best-selling artists on Folksy. In this meet the maker interview, Sarah talks to Karen from Pedro’s Plaques and Pretty Things about her art, her studio and her inspiration.

I’m fascinated by recreating natural form with layering and depth of colour. The more detail the better.

Hi Sarah, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you?
Hi, I’m Sarah Capper, the person behind the exquisitely detailed doodles at Doodleicious Art. I guess I’m a bit of a dreamer and am inspired by an eclectic mix of 1960s flower power, relaxed Boho style, natural patterns and colour found in nature around us. Art Nouveau and fairytale illustrations have had a big influence on my style, yet I also love with cutting edge architecture. My degree was in textiles design and I veered towards very detailed intricate embroidery towards the end of the course. I’m fascinated by recreating natural form with layering and depth of colour. The more detail the better.

I love to capture as much detail as possible in my illustration work. Recreating something that looks similar, yet with a floral twist.

Do you have a favourite thing to draw?
I’m drawn towards natural forms and love to capture as much detail as possible in my illustration work. Recreating something that looks similar, yet with a floral twist, I guess.

The details in each piece are incredible. Do you draw them all by hand?
Yes, I draw all of my work by hand and often wish I could do things a little quicker by using a tablet, but I prefer pen to paper and don’t often have to scrap anything and start again. I spend a bit of time studying what I’m about to draw and sketch out quickly with a pencil, before applying the ink and colour.

On average I’d say it takes me around six hours to create a piece from start to finish.

How long on average does each piece take to create?
It all depends on the amount of detail that’s required to capture the image. On average I’d say it takes me around six hours from start to finish.

I love your British Bird collection. Do you draw your inspiration from the world around you?
Yes, I’d say that all my inspiration comes from what I see around me. I don’t go out looking for inspiration – it’s captured and stored for future use, often in my subconscious. I love to draw something challenging and true to life, but with a floral slant.

I tear things out of sketchbooks and randomly pin them around my workspace and this inspires me and keeps me focused.

What does your workspace look like?
I work from home and I love to pin up magazine cuttings and old pieces of artwork. I tear things out of sketchbooks and randomly clip or pin them around my workspace and this inspires me and keeps me focused. I love my workspace! I’m a single mum to a little girl and space is at a premium in our cottage. A few years ago you’d often have caught me drawing with a head torch on in the corner of my daughter’s bedroom!

You’re well established as an artist. What advice would you give to someone who is new to selling online?
I think that if you’re determined enough to make a living from art, then you must put the hours in and stay focused. You must learn the business side and stay true to yourself and develop your own style.

Have you always wanted to be an artist?
Yes, always! I just didn’t know how to go about it, so everything I’ve learned has been self-taught. It’s important to ask as many questions as you can if you want to follow an art career.

I’m predominately a greeting card publisher, so I have to follow the seasons and these are designed months before. For example, I’m just about to work on Christmas designs for 2020 and it’s not even Christmas 2019 yet!

Do you work on one collection at a time? How do you stay focused?
Yes, I do. I work out in my head what’s coming next. I’m predominately a greeting card publisher, so to some extent I have to follow the seasons, and these are designed months before. For example, I’m just about to work on Christmas designs for 2020 and it’s not even Christmas 2019 yet!
