DIY Tutorial – Cute Christmas Stocking Tags
If you like getting crafty at Christmas, Fallon at Handmade Retro Jewellery has created a super cute tutorial showing you how to make a tag in polymer clay to personalise your stockings – use a different stamp for each member of the family to make them really unique. These little festive tags are also perfect for hanging on your Christmas tree or even attaching to presents as handmade gift tags, and they’re loads of fun to make!
Read on for all the instructions and find Fallon on Folksy at Handmade Retro Jewellery. You can also find out more about Fallon in our Meet the Maker interview here.

You will need:
- White polymer clay
- Plastic or glass rolling pin
- Glass surface or a ceramic tile
- A small round cutter
- Christmas stamp of your choice (I prefer to use photopolymer stamps as there is less additional edging when transferring into the clay)
- Straw or a small tool to make holes
- Craft knife
- Baking tray
- Acrylic paint
- Small paintbrush
- String or twine
Step-by-step instructions

Step 1. Start by rolling out the polymer clay on your glass surface/ceramic tile using your rolling pin.

Step 2. Once it’s rolled to about 3mm thick, use a stamp of your choice to gently press into the clay, making sure you use the same amount of pressure across the whole of the stamp area.

Step 3. Use your round cutter to cut out the design out. Make sure you position your design in the centre of the circle.

Step 4. Use a straw to poke a hole into the top of your clay piece, so it can hang.

Step 5. Use a craft knife to gently lift up the clay disc and transfer it on to your baking tray or a ceramic tile. Be careful not to get fingerprints on the clay, and not to squash the clay out of shape.
Step 6. Bake in a conventional kitchen oven as per the instructions on the clay packet (usually around 30 minutes on 110 degrees celsius).

Step 7. Once cooled, use acrylic paint to add colour to your design, carefully painting the stamped area using a small paint brush. You might need two coats of paint. Leave to dry. If you want to, you can varnish your tag once the paint is dry, but this isn’t always necessary.

Step 8. Once dried, add a bit of twine or string to your handmade tag. It’s now ready to attach to your stocking, or hang on the tree. Enjoy!
