How to add your own images to our Canva templates

Canva templates make it easy for you to add your own images to ready-made graphics, which you can then share on social media to promote an event or join in with a campaign.

Canva is free to use – although there is also a Pro account if you want to access more features.

In this post and video, we’re going to show you how to add your own photos to the templates we have created for the Buy Less, Buy Better, Buy Handmade campaign, which is a collaboration between Folksy, Crafts CouncilHeritage CraftsGreat Northern Contemporary Craft FairCRAFT Festival and Find A Maker to encourage people buy one really well-crafted, unique gift, rather than lots of mass-produced presents that may just end up in landfill.

Please note that this guide is for using Canva on a desktop Mac using Chrome as the browser, and the instructions may differ for your device. For more specific advice, follow the links below or go to Canva Help >

To add your own images to the Canva templates for the Buy Less, Buy Better, Buy Handmade campaign:

  • First open templates http://shorturl.at/opvDX (You may need to register for Canva account – a basic account is free.) Click the Use Template button
  • To upload your own images, you first need to select the images you want on your computer and then either
    • 1) drag them from your computer folder to the Uploads tab on Canva or
      2) on the editor side panel, select the Uploads tab, click Upload files and select the files that you want to upload – more help here https://www.canva.com/help/upload-media/
  • Scroll down through our templates and find the one you want to use. Click on it.
  • Select the image you want to add from the Uploads tab. Click on it. More help here – https://www.canva.com/help/add-images/
  • Once your image is on the template, resize it if you need to by pulling the corners, so it fills the whole square. It’s a good idea to pull it a little over the borders so you know there are no gaps. Sometimes the image automatically fills the whole square and you won’t need to do any resizing.
  • When you’re happy with where the image sits, click the Position button. Depending on the size of your screen you may need to click the three dots or close the side panel to reveal it.
  • Click the Backwards button until your image goes behind the text and the black overlay layer.
  • Adjust the Transparency on the black overlay until you are happy with the balance so the text is clear. To do that:
    • 1) Click the element you want to edit.
    • 2) On the toolbar above the editor, click on Transparency.
  • Repeat the process for any of the other templates you want to use.
  • You can move the templates up and down in order, so you have the ones you have customised at the top.
  • When you’re happy and ready to download, click the Share button in the top right corner. Then click the Download button. Choose the format you would like to download (leaving this as png is usually fine). More help here – https://www.canva.com/help/download-or-purchase/?query=download
  • Click the Download button to download all the templates. Or choose the pages you would like to download by clicking the All Pages button and then ticking the ones you want to download.
  • The templates will be downloaded to your computer and saved in the Downloads folder. You can move them from here to where you want to save them.

We hope this is useful and makes it even easier for you to join our campaign!
